BenQ W5000 Projector Review

With their new Home Cinema Series W5000 DLP projector, BenQ brings full HD, native 1080p enjoyment to a new level of affordability without compromising performance. Consumers can now indulge in cinema-class luxury at home on a modest matinee budget - an ESP of just $2,499 leaves plenty of room for a thumping sound system, Blu-ray player and all the fixings for a well-equipped theater under $5,000. With a 65" LCD TV costing around $5,999 ESP, who wouldn't trade up to a 196" theater projection at half the cost? And not only will movies be more thrilling on a true big screen, but, with dual HDMI inputs, so will battling life-size ghouls on the latest HD gaming consoles. Featuring a slew of high-end technologies, BenQ's W5000 is the latest blockbuster release for dealers and consumers alike - the W5000 leads the pack towards DTC's forecasted 2008 consumer trend of value-priced 1080p projectors on the rise.
W5000: BENQ'S NEW ULTRA-BRIGHT STUNNER
A key difference between watching a movie at your local theater and a movie off any ol' projector is dark and bright scene detail. To experience true cinema-class picture quality at home, it's all about lumens and contrast - the higher, the better! That's why BenQ engineers equipped the W5000 with a powerful 1200 ANSI lumens and a proprietary Dual Iris design to bring out every eerie dark detail and every moment of blinding-bright glory in today's high-impact, visually intense movies like "Lord of the Rings" - overly dark and overly bright scenes will wow in the same stunning detail as in commercial theaters.
First, the W5000's 1200 ANSI lumens is powerful enough to vibrantly display a 16-foot picture from as far away as 26 feet. High lumens ensure even the smallest details appear clear and razor-sharp. Second, BenQ's Dual Iris Technology enhances image contrast via a two-step process that ultimately makes bright scenes appear crisper and more vivid without being washed out, and fine-tunes dark scenes to reveal all their intricate details as Hollywood intended. Plus, all gradients between are more sharply refined. BenQ's Advanced Continuous Electronic Iris instantly adjusts light in the same manner as the human eye - opening and closing to measure the optimal amount of light for each scene. Dual Iris Technology also employs Texas Instruments leading-edge DynamicBlack to further optimize contrast via digital analysis of each and every scene. And for simple one-touch optimized viewing of all multimedia applications, the W5000 comes with four preset viewing modes - Cinema, Standard, Dynamic and Photo. Plus, users can set an additional three customized settings. Industry-acclaimed ISF Certified Calibration Controls (ISFccc) additionally enables quick customized settings for each home¿s unique lighting environments.
EVERY COLOR COUNTS
Even with a full 1.07 billion colors, the W5000 makes sure every color counts! A high-speed, 7-segment color wheel strikes the best balance between optimal brightness and radiant color. BrilliantColor technology also expands color space beyond the traditional red, green and blue (RGB), empowering the W5000 to aptly project yellows, magenta and cyans - colors other projectors struggle with - in bold richness. From dark colors to the palest pastels, the W5000 delivers exceptional color fidelity. VIDI Lighting further fuels brightness by delivering more lumens on screen than competing systems and normal lamps. And, whereas conventional projectors struggle with red and blues, the W5000 actually increases red and blues by 15% for exceptional color reproduction. Senseye Human Vision Technology for independent color adjustments, full 10-bit processing and full 4:4:4 color sampling further contribute to truly matchless color creation!
MOTION THAT MOVES YOU
In the heat of the battle or the rush of the race, you want action that captivates and takes you into the moment, and not be distracted by blurring, jaggies or picture noise. For amplified viewing pleasure without the amplified annoyances of common projectors, the W5000 incorporates Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) processing, 1024 Tap Scaling and proprietary Senseye technology for liquid-smooth motion that moves you into the scene! And when you don¿t have the latest HD-formatted content to take advantage of the W5000's 1080p/24fps standard (the same format used for professional movie filming and Blu-ray discs), you can still enjoy HD-like quality from all your sub-1080p sources. That's because the W5000's HQV processing automatically 'upgrades' all content, even analog. In a process similar to that used by Hollywood studios, the W5000 analyzes and adjusts pixels one at a time for sharper, cleaner imagery. And, unlike other projectors that only consider the surrounding 16 pixels, the W5000 examines the surrounding 1024 pixels for flawless imagery. BenQ's unique Senseye technology also processes content to deliver image quality that's a cut above the rest. De-interlacing is doubly more effective than the competition since Senseye analyzes not just the current frame, but the previous frame as well. Advanced filtering also effectively eliminates artifacts lying in even the shallowest angles - 5° to 7°. Regular technologies can only adjust at angles larger than 30° to 45°.
Setting up the W5000 to create a dream theater is also a snap. The projector easily couples with a motorized Panamorph lens to enable movies to be projected in their original 2.35:1 widescreen format at maximum resolution with no image distortion or letterboxing! Powered vertical lens shift is a feature installers will truly appreciate - eliminating the need for the projector to be perfectly centered to the screen. Powered shift also allows users to easily adjust image centering. A front vent exhaust design opens more installation options, while dual HDMI inputs allow users to enjoy their two most-used sources without the hassles of connecting and disconnecting cables.
The Home Cinema Series W5000 is now available nationwide at an ESP of $2,499.
